Amateur Status
NAIA Amateur Status does not apply when a student engages in athletic contest for the educational value, personal pleaseure, satisfaction and/or for the love of the sport, not for monteary or material gain. (Article VII, Section A, Item 1, NAIA Bylaws)
Acts that cause an athlete to lose Amateur status:
- Receiving expense reimbursement beyond actual travel, meals and lodging (expenses must be itemized and documented)
- Signing a contract with a professional team
- Participating in athletic contest as a professional or as a member of a team where the student receives more in reimbursement then actual cost of travel, lodging and meals
- Exploiting for remuneration athletic ability or fame through exhibition or radio, television appearance or using athletic fame to write for news media for pay beyond actual expense
- To promote any commercial product or enterprise for remuneration using name or picture
- Entering into any agreement of any kind to compete in professional athletics
