What is Athlete’s Foot?
Athlete's Foot is a fungus scientifcally known as Trichophyton. It thrives on areas of the skin that stay moist and warm for extended periods of time. Trichophyton can occur anywhere on the body, but is most commonly found on feet, hence the name Athlete's Foot. It's also can be known tinea pedis, which is caused by ringworm. It can be spread through contact, like the gym floor, lock rooms, swimming pools and shared equipment.
What are the symptoms?
- Itching and burning
- Skin may peel
- Some cases severe pain, cracking and bleeding
How can you treat Athlete’s Foot?
- Keep the area dry and clean
- Medicated powders (micronazole or tolnaftate)
- Soak feet for 10 min in 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water bath
- Lamisil cream or spray
- If it is a severe case an oral pill like terbinafine needs to be taken for 2-3 weeks
- If the fungus has spread to the nails those must be treated as well so the fungus doesn’t keep re-occurring
