NCAA Letter of Intent

The NCAA Eligibility Center manages the daily operations of the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program while the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides governance oversight of the program. Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the program now includes 612 Division I and II participating institutions.

NCAA Transferring Rules can be complicated depending on the division and conference. Transferring between conferences could have more restrictive rules than the basic NCAA rules. For example, conferences can differ on how long you have to attend a school before you able to compete. (Bylaw 14.5)

Red Shirting vs Hardship Waiver

What is Red Shirting?
Red shirting is when a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. This means if you did not compete for a year you still have four years of playing eligibility.

What is a Hardship Waiver? (Bylaw 14.2.5)
A Hardship Waiver is when a student-athlete applies for athletic hardship due to season ending injury or illness. Check with your institution and conference on the guidelines for red-shirting or hardship.
